Patient Perceptions and Satisfaction with Quality of Post-operative Nursing Care: Insights from Surgical Wards in a Tertiary Healthcare Institution, Benin City, Nigeria

Abstract:

Purpose: The study assessed patient’s perception of quality and satisfaction of with postoperative nursing care in surgical wards in University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo state. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used, among 184 participants selected using simple random technique. A researcher developed and validated questionnaire was used as instrument of data collection. Data collected was analyse using descriptive statistics while hypothesis tested using multiple logistic regression at 5% level of significant. Data analysis was done with SPSS version 28. Findings Results showed that 125(89.9%) had a positive perception toward quality nursing care, 122(87.8%) are satisfied, while 17(12.2%) are dissatisfied with postoperative nursing care. Major factors that contributed to patient satisfaction with postoperative nursing care were availability of family and support persons and maintenance of safety and comfort with a mean of 3.72 and 3.68 respectively, while the least factor was staff attitude and teamwork with a mean of 3.51.
