Perceived Determinants of Willingness to Implement Task Shifting of Nursing Procedures in Selected Healthcare Institutions, Ilorin

Abstract:

Background: Task shifting allows for reorganization of workforce along with expanded training which encourages the health care system. The implementation of nursing task shifting allows nurses to efficiently use the existing workforce and ease bottle necks in health care service delivery among limited workforce capacity. 
Objective: This study assesses the willingness of nurses to implement task shifting of nursing procedures in selected health care institutions in Ilorin.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was adopted using quota sampling technique to select 110 nurses for this study. Ethical approval was sort from the studied institutions and nurses informed consent was given prior to data collection exercises and the reliability of instrument was ascertained using statistical product service solution version 25 and result was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance.
Results: Findings from this study revealed that 94% of the nurses have knowledge about task shifting, 60% are willing to practice task shifting while 66% perceived task shifting to be a good approach. Factors hindering the implementation of task shifting are hospital policy (7%), work overload on junior nurses (3%). Categories of nursing task identified to be shifted were serving of bed pans (3.26; ±1.34), draining of urine bag (3.11; ±1.38), and serving patients meal (3.17; ±1.29) among others. 
Conclusion: This study Concluded that there was a Statistically significant association between determinants of implementation, willingness to practice task shifting and effectiveness of nursing care among nurses in health care institutions of Ilorin.
