Abstract:

Background: There is a growing concern over the challenges of eye health problems despite the availability of treatments for common eye conditions in the communities.

Objectives: To examine effect of Nursing Health Education Intervention on the knowledge and Determinants of Health Seeking-behaviours toward prevention of Eye Health-Problems among Residents in Ilorin-east.

Methods: A quasi-experimental design of one group pre and post-test intervention was adopted. Researchers designed questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection with reliability at 0.70 p-Value, determined through pilot study. Multistage sampling technique was used to randomly select four political wards from twelve wards and 220 residents were purposively sampled for the periods of two weeks. A structured nursing health education protocol was designed focusing on the research objectives. Questionnaires were administered before and after interventional sessions and results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to answer research questions and testing hypotheses with paired t-test of 0.05 significance level.

Results: The findings shown significant improvement in knowledge about eye health problems (71.08), knowledge about determinant factors to eye problems and increased health-seeking behaviours in willingness to take preventive measures at 79.0% after intervention at t-value of 7.22 greater than the table value (1.96).

Conclusion: The study concluded that health education interventions enhanced knowledge about determinants of eye conditions and health-seeking behaviours in willingness to access eye care services among residents in Ilorin.
