Abstract:

Background: Stem cell banking is an emerging advancement in regenerative medicine with potential applications in the treatment of numerous hematological, metabolic, and genetic disorders. In India, the growth of commercial cord blood banking services contrasts with limited awareness and understanding among women. Inadequate knowledge, misconceptions, and financial concerns often influence decision-making and limit informed utilization of stem cell banking services. Objectives: To explore women’s perceptions of stem cell banking and to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured educational intervention on knowledge and attitude among women in a selected community in Chennai. Methods: An exploratory sequential mixed method design was adopted. Phase one involved semi-structured interviews with eighteen women selected through purposive sampling to explore perceptions, awareness, and barriers related to stem cell banking. The findings guided the development of a culturally appropriate, sixty-minute educational intervention. Phase two employed a one-group pre-test and post-test design with sixty women selected through convenience sampling. Knowledge and attitude were assessed using validated tools. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Qualitative findings revealed limited baseline awareness, prevalent misconceptions, perceived benefits, financial concerns, and a preference for simple, locally understandable educational content. Following the intervention, mean knowledge and attitude scores showed a statistically significant improvement. Knowledge and attitude demonstrated a positive correlation. Education level and parity were significantly associated with knowledge improvement, while age, occupation, and income were not. Conclusion: The structured educational intervention was effective in improving women’s knowledge and attitude toward stem cell banking. Implications for Nursing: Nurses can play a key role in delivering community-based educational programs on stem cell banking to promote informed decision-making and improve maternal health awareness.
